Flames in MILB & MLB

Liberty has always had quite a few players drafted from the program over the years.  The Flames had some serious MLB talent in it's teen years before entering a dry spell.  That's all changed in the last couple years starting with Ryan Cordell who is now retired.  Will Wagner, Trey Gibson & Mason Fluharty have all had significant time in the show this year.  I'll dive in and take a look at the former Flames in MLB & MILB.

Trey Gibson - Gibson has ascended from undrafted Free Agent to the #4 prospect in the Orioles system.  Trey had a 3.55 ERA in 38 IP to go along with a 1.53 WHIP .260 Opp BA and 38 K's for 1 strikeout per inning,  Gibson started in the Spring breakout game and went 3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox top prospects in a game I was able to attend.  He got the call in May and has started 6 games for the Orioles with a 5.64 ERA over 30 1.3 IP with 25 K's, .261 Opp BA and 1.65 WHIP.  The Orioles broadcasts have been positive on Gibson and he's been averaging just over 5 innings per start.  Most project Gibson to be a #3 or #4 starter with the ceiling of a #2.

Mason Fluharty - Fluharty broke in with the Jays last year during their World Series run.  He's been a mainstay since as he's logged over 81 IP out of the bullpen and as an opener for the Jays.  He's 3-0 in 43 games this year with a 3.98 ERA and 39 K's to go along with a 1.48 WHIP.  He has a 4.27 ERA for his career.  He looks like a guy that might pitch for 10-12 years in the league in his role.

Will Wagner - Wagner was dealt at the deadline last year to the Padres.  He's now logged 240 at bats in his MLB career.  He had reached the T10 in the Astros system before being dealt to the Jays.  This year he's hit .276 with a .742 OPS in 29 PA's for the Pads.  Wags appears to be a utility man at the big league level but if his bat comes around he could carve out an everyday role as a 2B or 3B in with a smaller market team.

MILB

Garrett Horn - Horn was dealt to the Twins at the deadline last year.  He's currently on the IL but he's logged a 2.70 ERA in 6 appearances while logging 16 2/3 IP.  He has 19 K's and a 1.08 WHIP.  Horn is currently in High A at Cedar Rapids in his age 23 season.  Horn still has a pretty high ceiling if he can stay healthy.  I think he will end up as a reliever and stick around the game for a while.

Cole Hertzler - The former Flames RHP is the #21 prospect in the Astros system.  He's currently in AA Corpus Christi where he's made 2 starts since his call up and has a 1.93 ERA.  In High A he logged a 2.72 ERA in just over 43 IP while punching out 64 and limiting the opponents to a paltry .169 BA.  He had a 1.16 WHIP.  A forearm strain limited Hertlzer in 2025 but he appears to be fully rebounded.  He's still a very low mileage arm that has a ceiling of a #2 starter but projects more as a #3 or #4.

Cam Troyer - Troyer is in High A Hudson Valley in the Yankees system.  He's hit .231 7 HR's and 21 RBI's to go along with a .705 OPS in just over 208 PA's.  Troyer has moved around the OF a bit nad has played some CF if the stats are correct.  The power he showed in his final year with the Flames has stuck thus far.  I think Troyer could be a 4th OF if the power sticks through the minors.  He has an elite arm and plays great Defense.

Dylan Mathiesen - Mathiesen is still recovering from TJ surgery.  I'd expect he may get in some action here in Bradenton in the FCL before their season ends in late July.

Joe Adametz - Adametz has struggled in 2026 in High A Hub City in the Tigers system.  He has a 7.71 ERA in in 46 2/3 IP with a 1.78 WHIP.  Joe will have to turn it around in the second half or this could be the end of the road.

Max Alba - Alba is in AA Eerie in the Tigers system.  He has a 4.91 ERA in 40 1/3 IP with 40 K's and a 1.44 WHIP.  Alba is 1 of those guys that has done better in MILB that he ever really did in College.  He's got some pitchability and could find his way on the back of a roster somewhere.

Mikey Tepper - Tepper is in High A Wilmington in the Nats system.  He has a 2.12 ERA in 29 2/3 IP with 31 K's and a 1.35 WHIP.  He's 2-1 and has really come in 2026 as that ceiling that he showed in HS that led to Tepper being a highly sought after prospect has started to take route.

Dylan Cumming - Cumming was undrafted out of Liberty but has worked his way up to AA Birmingham in the White Sox system.  The start of the carolina blue uniform unveiling video that went viral has bounced around a bit and struggled to a 6.14 ERA in 66 IP this year while punching out 60.  Cumming has really come a long way since transferring in to Liberty from a program that was folding.

Noah Skirrow and Fraser Ellard have retired from the game.  Both got very close and Ellard had several appearances in the show.  Skirrow peaked with an appearance in the WBC for team Canada in each of the last 2 WBC/s,  If Skirrow is still pitching anywhere else in Indy ball this year I haven't been able to find it.

As you can tell lots of Flames in the game and they will have at least 2 more join them in Ben Blair and Tanner Marsh and perhaps as many as 5 in next months draft.
