The Flames got the first scrimmage of the year in on Friday despite blustery conditions.  Dylan Cumming and Joe Adametz were the starters in the 6 inning scrimmage.  The game featured 3 doubles from Aaron Anderson, Derek Orndorff & Ty Peters.  Betts, Mathieu, Majkowski, Lazarro, Hill & Keeter all had singles in the live action.  Betts and Anderson drove up pitch counts in their AB's and looked ready to set the table atop the Flames lineup once again for the 22 season.  Trey Carter shined with 4 K's in 2 innings as he has focused exclusively on pitching since the fall.  Mason Fluharty was sharp with 3 punch outs as well.  Hungate and Erickson also saw time on the mound in the scrimmage.

Sounds like the Flames will take today off with the snow and cold weather pushing through the area.  Scrimmages are planned for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The weather won't keep the Flames completely quiet this weekend as we hear a couple of very talented recruits are on the mountain visiting this weekend.

Health wise it sounds like the group is relatively healthy with the exception of 1 potential non season ending injury which we are trying to confirm.

I still believe the lineup and rotation we projected in the Fall is fairly accurate.  The rotation should be some combination of Adametz, Alba, Cumming & Gibson.  It remains to be seen exactly where the cards fall.  I continue to hear that the pitching staff is probably the deepest the program has ever featured.  It's good to see Hill, Lazzaro, Orndorff & Majkowski contributing early.  We know what Betts, Gulakowski, Anderson, Mathieu & Guy can do.  If those 4 players contribute along with 2 or 3 of the freshman the offense should be just fine and have several different looks.  Plus you never know when a veteran gets an opportunity and steps up that hasn't had many AB's in the past.  Anderson joined Nick Pierce on the Flames Clubhouse report and the one guy he kept mentioning was Gulakowski and how much he was looking forward to seeing a full season from Brady now that he's healthy.  Gulakowski finished the season on a tear including smashing 2 3 run shots again Duke in the opener of the regionals.  Anderson also mentioned Tim Miller who is the Richmond transfer RHP that could factor in out of the bullpen.

Stay with us, the fun is just getting started.

  1. Bit of trivia. Keeter and Gibson are cousins. Keeter is also cousin with Trot Nixon (2004 World Series Champion) and of course his son Chase who is a Freshman with NC State Baseball team.

    1. Good stuff! Somehow as a kid i became a huge Red Sox fan. Trot was one of my top 2 favorite players along with Nomar. The original dirt dog. They have Trot's signed hat at the Chesapeake House in Myrtle Beach that I eat at fairly often when down there. Glad Keeter and Gibson are Flames, Future is bright! Thanks for reading.
